What is prayer?
Prayer is a gracious gift of God that allows us to walk into His presence and talk to Him as our Father and Him speaking to us as sons and daughters; Jer 33:3. Prayer is the speaking part of our relationship and fellowship with God, Matt. 7:7. It has been said that God answers our prayer by saying No, saying Wait or saying Yes, not in any particular order but depending on how He sees things because He is the Alpha and Omega, He declares the end from the beginning and the beginning from the end. Rev. 1:8; Psalms 65:2
Prayer is one of the tool that God has given to us His children but we sometimes under estimate the power of prayers Matt 21:22; Mark 11:24.
What is a prevailing prayer?
A prevailing prayer is the one that avail much, that reward, that is predominant, that is powerful, that is profitable, that is commanding and above all that gets result. The bible is packed full men and women that prevailed in prayers i.e Moses, Samuel, Esther, Elijah, Elisha, Jesus, The apostles to mention view.
…the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avail much, James 5:16b.
Based on this verse of the scriptures, there are three essentials that are prerequisite for a prayer that gets result; the person praying must be righteous; the prayer must be fervent and the prayer must be effective.
- The person praying must be righteous
For a prevailing prayer, the person praying must be Righteous. Righteous means blameless, honest, moral, good etc. and when we are talking about righteousness, we mean right standing with God, no blameless, no spot or wrinkle. In Gen. 17:1; God was speaking to Abraham to walk before Him spotlessly because He is Holy and He cannot behold any iniquities and without holiness no one can see Him 1 Peter 1:15-16;Heb.12:14.
This right standing with God cannot be attained through self, but through the righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ we are made holy before our God Rom. 3:20-22. We receive His righteousness when we repent and confess our sins. Rom. 6:23; 2 Cor. 5:21.
- The prayer must be fervent
Second essentials for a prevailing prayers is that it must be FERVENT, it must be prayers with zeal and passion. Faith in God and bold action is needed for a prevailing prayers, for without faith it is impossible to please Him. In Esther 4:16, Esther said, if I perish, I perish and in Neh. 1:4, Nehemiah mourned and wept when he heard the state of the wall of Jerusalem. We can see the compassion and zeal of these people.
- The prayer must be effective.
The third essentials for a prevailing prayers to be effective is that it must be based on the word of God. God said He honours His word more than His name and His words will not return back to Him until it is accomplished the purpose for which it has been sent for Psalms 138:2; Isa 55:11, Jer 1:12
In prayer the Word of God should be in our heart and in our mouth and should be used to remind Him of His promises to us Isa. 46:23.
Hindrance to Prayers
Below are some of the things than can cause our prayers to go unanswered.
- Sin. If sin is regarded, prayer cannot prevail. Psalm 66:18; Lev. 11:44; 1 Pet.1:16; IThes.4:7
- Wrong motive(s). Jam 4:3
- Unforgiveness. Mark 11:25-26.
- Other little foxes, that spoil the vines. Songs of Sol 2:15
In conclusion, Guy H. King said “No one’s a firmer believer in the power of prayer than the devil; not that he practices it, but he suffers from it.” Prayer is one of the Christian’s most powerful spiritual assets, yet some are missing out on its effectiveness, Jesus said “If you ask anything in His name, He will do it. John 14:13-14, Why not develop a relation with Him today if you have not because this is start of a prevailing prayer or if your prayer has not been effective as it ought to be while not ask the Holy Spirit (The revealer of all truths) to help you identify the cause and take step by asking for His mercy. Shalom!
